When you feed sheep, no matter how many you are going to feed, this is one of the most important things when rasing sheep. Feed is one of the most expensive costswhen owning sheep. Do not overfeed sheep because of it being so expensive to do so.
On the other hand, you do not want to underfeed sheep either because it can lead to a drop in peformance and increase the chance of health problems.
Feeding sheep the proper way means you have to get the right nutrients to the phase that the sheep is in. The nutrients that are most important for sheep are: water, energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. To sum it all up, feeding sheep properly is getting the right nutrients and forage type with the right production stage of the sheep. In the following paragraphs I will discuss all the most important nutrients in more detail.
Water is the most important nutrient for sheep as well as it is for all animals. Always make sure there is plenty of water at hand for your sheep to drink. Especially because some parts of the United States there is a lot of water and in other parts there is very little.
There are many things that depend on the amount of water a sheep needs to drink on a daily basis. Some of these things are: the production stage the sheep is in, what feeds they are eating, how much water is in the feed, and the temperature of the sheep's environmet. Sheep will drink 1/2 to 1 gallon of water on a daily basis. This depends though on the size of the sheep. In the winter if there is snow, as long as it is not hard, sheep will eat enough of the snow to get all the water they will need.
If the water is not clean there will be a decline in the production of sheep. This will cause them to eat less, have trouble digesting food properly, be more likely to get
digetive and metabolic problems.
Energy is required in the largest amount of sheep. Energy is also the most expensive thing when raising sheep. Energy is usually used for maintance or productive functions. The amount of energy sheep needs depends on the size of the sheep, the production stage they are in, the amount of exercise they get, and the temperature of the environment they are in. The larger the sheep the larger the amount of energy it will need. Sheep in smaller environments don’t need as much energy as sheep in larger environments.
The amount of protein sheep eat is more important than the quality of the protein. Protein is given to sheep the most when production is high. Sometimes protein might have to be given when the plant food they eat doesn’t have some of the protein content that it should. This tends to happen during the early winter or after plants have stopped growing.
Minerals are known as either macro or micro. The difference bettween these two determines the amount that is needed in their diet. The macrominerals that are needed for sheep are: green forages, legumes, ground limestone, bone meal, and dicalcium phosphate. Grains are not a good source of calicum.
The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is also important. If this ratio is not met, it is possible that a stone or crystal formation can occur in the bladder and kidneys. These formations can also block the urethral tract and even block urination. If this happens it can be life threatening to male sheep.
You can mix sodium and chlorine together to make salt. You can use this salt as a supplement. This is a good idea because a lot of sheep don’t get any salt and are salt
starved.
Magnesium is very important. If sheep don’t get enough they can get a condition called grass tetany. You can prevent this from happening by feeding them minerals with
a lot of magnesium.
